A man who expressed thoughts about suicide and was briefly hospitalized returned home on Memorial Day and fatally shot his wife, her father and her stepmother before killing himself, police said.

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh said 29-year-old Sean Ganey shot his wife, Cassidy Ganey, 25; her father, Kenny Adair, 55; her stepmother, Shelly Lorenz-Adair, 48; and then himself.

The Ganeys' five-year-old daughter was present but unharmed. Fitzhugh says she was 'quickly moved out' of the home.

Deputies were first called to the home on Rivercrest Drive in Walter Hill on Friday, for a report of a man making a suicide threat.

Officers took Sean Ganey to a hospital and removed what they believed to be all the weapons of the home.

'We took care of the situation,' Fitzhugh said. 'He was transported to the hospital and under the investigation, we're trying to find out what took place after that once we dropped him off at the hospital'

'There was a search made at the home and all of the weapons at that time that we could find were removed by family members on Friday,' Fitzhugh added. 'Of course as you know, anybody that's that serious about getting a weapon, they're gonna get one. You do the best you can.'

It's unclear how Ganey got the weapon used in the killings.

Authorities said they were trying to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fatal shootings. They said marital strife may be to blame.

'We do think that there may have been a possibility of a divorce or at least comment of a divorce that may have led to this,' the sheriff said.

He continued: 'The events that led to this I think are very tragic. It's a terrible outcome to a situation that we see far too often. It's something that we don't like to see.'
