Jean Rogers

Jean Rogers, 74, actress who played the heroine of two “Flash Gordon” adventures and other serial films, died Feb. 24 in Sherman Oaks, Calif., following surgery.

Born Eleanor Lovegren in Belmont, Mass., she moved to Hollywood after winning a high school beauty contest and made her first picture, “Eight Girls In A Boat,” in 1934. That year she also appeared in the serial “The Great Air Mystery.”

Two years later, she co-starred in “Flash Gordon” as Dale Arden opposite Buster Crabbe’s title character. She also was featured in two other popular serials of the day, “The Adventures Of Frank Merriwell” and “Ace Drummond.”

Rogers made many features in the ’30s and ’40s, often having leading roles in B titles. Features include “Manhattan Moon,” “Conflict,” “Mysterious Crossing,” “Night Key,” “Reported Missing,” “Time Out For Murder,” “Always In Trouble,” “While New York Sleeps,” “Inside Story,” “Hotel For Women,” “Stop Look And Love” and “Heaven With A Barbed Wire Fence.”

Also, “The Man Who Wouldn’t Talk,” “Viva Cisco Kid,” “Charlie Chan In Panama,” “Yesterday’s Heroes,” “Dr. Kildare’s Victory,” “Sunday Punch,” “Pacific Rendezvous,” “A Stranger In Town,” “Whistling In Brooklyn,” “Rough Tough And Ready,” “Gay Blades,” “Hot Cargo,” “Backlash” and “Speed To Spare.”

Notable films in which Rogers appeared in supporting roles include “My Man Godfrey,” “Brigham Young – Frontiersman” and “Design For Scandal.” Her last film, “The Second Woman,” was made in 1951.
